The commonly accepted origin:

The first is that it comes from the practice of tightly tying bed frames to the posts of a bed so that the mattress would not become lumpy or saggy over time. This ensured a comfortable night's sleep for those lucky enough to have a well-made bed.

Also, beds were often made of materials like straw and the ropes that secured the bed together would loosen over time, causing a sag and a making sleeping more difficult.

A lesser known "possible' origin:

The second possible origin of the phrase is that it was once used as a wish for good luck. In olden times, people believed that bad spirits lurked in the dark and could cause harm if they were not dealt with appropriately. So, when someone said "sleep tight," they were actually wishing their loved ones a good night's sleep free from harm.
